Smooth stucco is a temperamental beast which is highly prone to cracking even at the very best of times. The color coat itself is only 1/8" in thickness and is highly responsive to even the slightest movement in the underlying base coat. Incorrectly sheathed framework can also play havoc with stucco finishes as tightly abutted plywood "pops" in its expansion.
